Linda Taylor, 50, was diagnosed with the disease three years ago and had an operation to remove 75 per cent of her liver, but the cancer returned.

Having been told it was inoperable a second time around, she had chemotherapy for three months, but it was stopped after the cancer failed to react.

Husband Gordon, 51, South Shields, said: "There was nothing else they could do but put her on steroids, but she was all right, she was getting by.

"We were hoping for a drug trial, but she wasn't strong enough, so they couldn't do it. Her life just deteriorated after that, mainly in the last three weeks."

Her brother, Eddie Cummings, South Shields, said: "I have never known a braver person in my life.

"I never saw one tear in her eye, I never heard her complain. She fought it to the bitter end."

Mrs Taylor was born in Green Lane, the youngest child and only daughter of the late Nancy and Bob Cummings.

She had four older brothers, Bobby, 65, Alan, 63, Lesley, 58, and Eddie, 55.

Mr Cummings added: "She was the boss. She was doted on by all of us."

Mrs Taylor passed her 11-plus and went to South Shields Girls High School. Her husband attended nearby Westoe Comprehensive and they met on the way home, aged 14 and 15.

They married at St Simon's Church six years later and celebrated their pearl wedding anniversary on April Fool's Day this year.

They have two children, Gordon, 27, and Steven, 23, and a three-year-old grand-daughter, Jessica.

"Jessica was the apple of her eye," said Mr Taylor. "She lived for her grand-daughter, that is what kept her going when she was first diagnosed – that is what kept her strong."

Mrs Taylor worked for the prescription pricing authority before she fell pregnant, returning to work at Woolworth's in South Shields for 11 years after raising her boys.

She then worked at Asda, South Shields, for four years until she fell ill.

Her hobbies included knitting, crochet, reading, bingo and socialising.

She attended a family party just weeks before she died on November 8.

Mr Taylor said: "She was just so outgoing. She would talk to anybody.

She had a positive attitude right to the end, nothing would ever get her down."

Mrs Taylor also leaves her mother and father-in-law, Sybil, 75, and Jimmy, 72, from Holder House, South Shields, and daughters-in-law Rachel, 25, and Leoni, 21.

Year Today Mam

Well mam a year has passed to the day and i miss u so much i never realised how hard it wud be without you, jessica was talking bout u yesterday when we went shopping saying ur a angel and on friday night she seen one star in the sky and said theres nana sleep tight mam love u so much steven rachel and jessica xxxxxxxxxx

We little knew that morning,
God was going to call your name,
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.
